Tamana, a non-profit voluntary organisation registered in March 1984, was created solely for the purpose of providing rehabilitative services for the mentally challenged, multiply disabled and autistic. Tamana was born out of the living faith and optimism of Dr. Shayama Chona (Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri Awardee), mother of Tamana Chona, who was born spastic with cerebral palsy.

Tamana literally means a longing, an aspiration. The organisation could not have been more aptly named, for at its heart lies an earnest longing, a lifelong aspiration to see the differently abled on their feet as happy, useful, integrated members of society.

Tamana NGO with its in-house diagnostic facilities backed with a team of special educators and therapists offers an Individual Educational Program for every student. The program is aimed at fostering social and economic independence of the differently abled by incorporating special education, regular academic program through the NIOS, therapeutic interventions, counseling, vocational skill training, extra-curricular and co-curricular activities.

Tamana is recognized by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India, Department of Social Welfare; Govt. of NCT Delhi, is registered with the National Trust and is in special consultative status with the United Nations’s Economic and Social Council.

Tamana is registered under section 51 of RPwDAct 2016 and under rule 22 of Delhi RPwD Rules, 2018, by the department ofSocial Welfare , Govt of NCT/Delhi.

At the organization’s heart lies an earnest aspiration to enable the differently abled citizens become inclusive and integrated members of the society.

MISSION

Tamana is a social movement. It is an infinite process in ensuring that the welfare of these children is the collective responsibility of a progressive and egalitarian society of which these children have a right to be an integral part.The NGO took it as its mission to empower children born with special needs by strengthening their functional independence as opposed to any kind of dependence and helplessness.

Under the cherished dream of seeing each child become an independent adult the many aims of the organization are:

Providing therapy and counselling to children and their families.
Educating and preparing multiply handicapped children to live within the community, having achieved threefold independence – physical, social and financial.
Creating and enhancing greater public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with special needs.
Contributing to the training and development of manpower in the field of special education.
Providing expert legal advocacy services.
Introducing relevant technology to enhance the effectiveness of special education
Conducting research in key areas of special education and training
Maintaining a motivated, compassionate, dedicated and quality-conscious team of professionals.
Establish and promote mutually beneficial relationships with international organisations with similar objectives.
